Addiction and Spirituality - The Way Home

There is a time and place in which the soul begins to seek a path of return to its lost home, and, finding the way blocked or invisible, yearns once again for the sense of peace and love that it remembers as having been part of its deepest longing. In that moment of time, when the soul turns toward the sun of its longing seeking remembrance and reunion, seeking the sense of peace and completion that it believes is possible, a significant step toward the light of Spirit is taken and the soul will never be the same again. At the same time, if the yearning for home is not realized by fulfillment, if the spiritual longing finds, instead, an emptiness of heart and a lack of response to its prayer for reunion, it can become disconsolate and greatly sorrowful, so much so that it gives up that which it has set its heart upon, and instead turns to other means by which to fulfill its desire for peace and for the essence of tranquility which can only be produced by the light.

These are the conditions under which addictive processes take place within the human psyche. They emerge from the condition of perceived separation from one's point of origin and spiritual home, and arise when the deeper longing of the soul still struggling to emerge within the human self, seeks its way back to the point of its Source and origin. They do not arise before this, because before this the embodied soul is fully engaged with life on the material plane. It is engaged both from the standpoint of seeking mastery and a sense of physical comfort and fulfillment, and in the sense of fascination with the many arenas of earthly learning and pleasure that are both sensory and spiritual - though the latter quality may be unknown to the self that pursues them. When the soul begins to find these pleasures and this mastery no longer sufficient to quiet the yearning that grows within the heart and the deeper levels of being, then the soul begins to lose hope that the life of the physical plane will be able to grant the satisfaction that it longs for. Instead, it may seek a substitute gratification that it hopes will steadfastly and surely be able to grant the kind of peace and soul-fulfillment that is desired.

Fundamentally, turning toward addiction is a spiritual act. However much it may be fueled by conditions of poverty, need, emotional instability, immaturity, or any other psychological variable, the replacement of the soul's yearning for completion and peace with a substitute is an act of spiritual seeking that has taken a turn away from its true destination toward an alternative destination. This is an act that is both an effort to resolve a spiritual dilemma, as well as an effort to grant immediate release from the pain of having to wait for a more authentic source of realization.

The difficulty in waiting for what one longs for but cannot yet have, and the emptiness that occurs in the presence of the heart's longing that neither mind nor senses can satisfy – these are the dilemmas of the embodied self that seeks relief from longing and a way of resolving the problems of time and of waiting. If the process of choice were engaged in more consciously, with greater awareness of what truly was being sought, it is likely that many more who turn to addictive substitutes could find within themselves the courage to wait through a period of pain and of emptiness. But the choice before the embodied self is rarely that conscious. And although a spiritual longing exists at its foundation, this longing is often not even dimly recognized by the conscious, experiencing self which only seeks an end to its pain – the pain of emptiness and the pain of loss.

When it is discovered through use of addictive substances, relationships, or habits of any kind that a kind of numbing of pain and of distress takes place through the ability of addiction to grant a temporary feeling of satisfaction, then the original impetus to find a spiritual solution to a basically spiritual dilemma is lessened. In such instances the soul must often wander far down the pathways of illusion before it discovers that the promise of peace and of satisfaction that an addictive substance or process seems to give is an illusion. It discovers that there is often more pain involved than satisfaction, and that the emptiness, in any case, never really goes away.

Some who choose this alternate route for easing a hunger of the soul continue a very long time in a state of illusion, until broken, desperate, and despairing, they return with empty hands and an empty heart to face the source of the problem. Others, who see more clearly or who are able to bear pain with greater courage, find that the path of addiction is a path of illusion and seek a change of direction and movement shortly after having embarked upon it.

The problem for many who embark on this road out of spiritual longing and out of a nameless pain that seems impossible to ease by any other route, is that there is no easing of the underlying cause of the pain except by continuing to incorporate more and more of the addictive substance, relationship, or process. This is true not only because the physiology of addiction prompts this kind of accelerated usage in order to maintain the same effect upon consciousness, but also because underneath it all, the awareness of one's own emptiness still and always remains. Addiction represents the desperation of the hopeless and the yearning who, with a sense of desiring to save themselves, seek a way out of their dilemma by turning to a source which seems to offer a possible way.

In the end, all addictive process whose origin is the state of separation that the embodied self experiences from God and from its true self, must be healed by finding its way back to the center of this dilemma – to the source of its own pain. When this can occur in a more authentic way, that is, when it is recognized that it is spiritual hunger that is fueling the craving for a substitute and illusory peace rather than a real peace, then, and only then, can the spiritual enlightenment of the embodied self begin in an authentic way.

Today, the problem of addiction and its spiritual underpinnings can be viewed in a new light. Because it the time now of increased spiritual light upon the earth, the underlying truth of addictive process can more easily come to the embodied soul, bringing with it greater clarity concerning inner motivations, longings, and formerly unconscious states. As a result, it is now more possible for the healing of addiction to rise beyond the level of psychological and physical forms of treatment that have proven effective in recent decades, but only to a certain degree, to a new and higher level of healing.

Now, it becomes possible for all addiction to be revealed in its true essence as a spiritual action designed to answer a need that it was believed could not be answered in any other way. With this longing exposed to the light of awakened consciousness, there is hope, today, that what has been a widespread and pervasive problem in both advanced and underdeveloped nations will have the chance of being healed in an equally widespread way at a core level. This new possibility comes out of the increased capacity of the human body and psyche to touch its own spiritual depths in ways that were not possible before. With this contact, the phenomenon of addiction can, in time, disappear as a solution to the problem of the soul's longing, and a new step can be taken toward the soul's true destination – the path of return toward its spiritual home.

Ayahuasca - Sacred Medicine for the Soul PART 2

I discovered that Ayahuasca is a medicine, so unlike the Western understanding, a medicine which works on every level, on the physical and non-physical beings, our consciousness, our emotions, and our spirit. It is as if you are drinking not just a liquid brew but imbibing an 'other' intelligence which knows exactly what is needed to help you. This is a communion in the true sense of the word, an intense experience of euphoria and ecstasy. A journey of deep and profoundly meaningful personal and trans-personal insights , a searchlight on the hidden thoughts and feelings in the sub-conscious mind, an erasing of the ego boundaries and a merging with the greater field of consciousness of creation.

The was more and more to experience, dieting some of the teacher plants such as Ajo Sacha and Guyasa, I felt my senses being altered , expanded in some ineffable way, and becoming aware of the song, the very rhythm of the rainforest. There was sound, smells, and sights around me, which I had not been aware of in my normal everyday waking state. I could zoom in on smells, and sound, I realised that the rainforest was one entity with the insects, birds, and animals being a part of the totality of the rainforest. I am in paradise when lying in my hammock; it is like floating within a living three-dimensional sensorial experience of sound, colour, smell, movement, and vibration all in harmony and great beauty.

The work with the visionary plants not only provides a philosophical frame of reference for my life so to speak, but is also a path for deep soul healing, and generates a desire to engage fully and with enthusiasm the world around me. Celestial visions are always very nice and pleasing but they must never cloud, disguise, or distract our real purpose to live in the full embodiment of being a human on this beautiful planet and striving to enrich that special and unique experience, our 'earth walk'. I recall some years ago when I led a group to the Amazon Rainforest, our initial gathering with our shaman Javier Arevalo so we could all introduce ourselves. Javier was very curious about Westerners, and was interested in knowing what we were searching for with the visionary plants. One participant stood up and said she wanted a clear and definitive understanding of the male and female principles of the universe, the cosmic "ying and yang" as she put it. Well Javier was totally mystified by this question, as when I have attended his sessions with local people who visit him for a consultation or session they ask about everyday problems and concerns such as "is my boyfriend / husband / girlfriend cheating on me?", or "why am I unlucky in finding a job?", "I need help to overcome this disease". Well we worked with our participant to explore what the real question was behind her initial enquiry, finally she said that she was really looking for love in her life, and of course, Javier could understand this deep desire completely, and was subsequently able to help her discover and reconcile the inner obstacles, which had been preventing this.

In this context, the teacher plants can provide a doorway to great and meaningful insights in the adventure of personal growth and healing. The growth and healing has therefore to be also in the physical world, thereby offering the opportunity to reveal our emotions, traumatic and turbulent experiences hidden or otherwise and so these can be released and ourselves restored. This access to our soul companion (our greater selves) , this flowing omni-present force guiding our life which presents with what are often called euphemistically "growth opportunities" for us to overcome. The plant teachers can show us these, where we can transcend linear time itself, and we journey within this eternal now at the very place in time where we experienced such a difficult event or suffered a troubled pervasive period in our life. We can re-experience this albeit from a different perspective, learn what happened, the reasons why it occurred and the subsequent impact and consequences on our life, and then to release any pain and trauma locked within our being. This release within the Ayahuasca experience is called 'la purga' our purge, when we literally purge this pain from our being, it is not only the contents of our stomach which are being released but also the deeply stored bile and sourness in our bodies generated from these difficult events. The plants offer us the potential for deep soul healing so we can become stronger and more able to engage fully in the precious gift of life.

Developing a personal relationship with Ayahuasca is within a background of an ancient body of practices. For example, there is a dietary regimen, and prohibitions regarding libidinous thoughts and activity. These considerations need to be respected and can not be ignored if one embarks on a path of communion with the plant. On observation and study (also called trial and error), this regime helps us to become more 'plant like', therefore increasing our receptivity to the plant-spirit-mind.

Many of my visionary experiences with Ayahuasca have led to a deeper understanding of my life and the role that various people had played in it. Sometimes I became those people, lived their lives, and came to understand why they did what they did, what decisions they had to make in their lives. These revelatory experiences invariably led to some form of closure with that person, like completing an open chapter, or a profound healing of my relationship with that person.

Universal Patterns of Behavior Considered - Archetype Cards

The theory of archetypes is nothing new and it has been considered far before Carl Jung made mention of the collective unconsciousness which are considered to house these personality types. Plato even referred to such things an discussed these ideas. Today there are archetype cards and there are some very cool books on all this.

Some of the cards are used for dreams others to help understand lifelong patterns. I would like to recommend that a couple of books to you, but before I do let me warn you not to be over sold or tricked into buying lesser quality cards in my opinion. Do not buy archetype cards of any type from hypocritical self-proclaimed spiritual gurus that are psychotherapists. In my personal view they simply are inferior. I would like to recommend the:

"Archetype Cards" by Caroline Myss

The collection is killer and she has some 80 archetype cards available. She has another great book that I recommend called;

"Awakening Your Divine Potential" an New York Times Best Seller.

So you should be buying the best not some Voodoo Imitation to be used in some bizarre dream scheme. Using her deck of cards and reading her other book you will learn a lot, without the spiritual new-age hype. For someone with an open mind they do indeed make a pretty cool gift and who ever you give them to will be happy.

Perhaps you need to do a little research on these things and look into who is really got the right idea on the ancient archetype forms or templates, I think Plato might in fact be proud of your efforts to promote these tools of enlightenment.

Ayahuasca - A Cure Through Love

Shamanic healing often employs plants to good effect, though it is rarely about herbalism, per se. Indeed, most shamans are explicit that the pharmacological properties of the plants they employ are of far less importance than the spirit which is held by the plant. It is the spirit which heals, while the plant itself is secondary, acting only as the home of the plant-spirit.

The point is illustrated by Amazonian shaman, Javier Arevalo, who serves the community of Nuevo Progreso, on the Rio Napo river of Peru, working with the visionary jungle vine, ayahuasca.

Ayahuasca is a powerful purgative and curative mixture which is used by the shamans of the Amazon to commune with the spirits, who then oversee the healing of the person who drinks the ayahuasca brew, while the shaman guides the healing session and appeals to the spirits on behalf of his client.

The mixture itself, blended in careful measure, contains ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and leaves of the chacruna plant (Psychotria viridis), often with datura and pure jungle tobacco, which cause the purging qualities that ayahuasca is famous for. The final mixture is also known as ayahuasca, from the Quechua words, aya meaning 'spirit' or 'dead', and huasca meaning 'rope' or 'vine'. Hence, the brew is often referred to as the 'vine of souls' or the 'rope of the dead'.

It is prepared by cutting the vines into short lengths which are then scraped, cleaned and pounded to a brown pulp. The vines, along with chacruna leaves and other ingredients are then placed in a cauldron, water is added, and the entire mixture is boiled for 10-12 hours, overseen at all stages by the shaman who will continuously blow sacred tobacco smoke into and over the brew. When ready, the mix becomes a muddy, pungent liquid with a foul, acrid taste.

Once ingested, the mixture produces initial feelings of warmth which spread up from the stomach, creating a sense of well-being and a sensation of skin elasticity, almost as if the skin has become rubber-like and pliable and no longer separate from the air around it. After this first phase, which may last 30-60 minutes, the visionary effects begin, which are often dramatic. Harvard ethnobotanist, Wade Davis, in his book, One River1, described the sensation as akin to being "shot out of a gun barrel lined with Baroque paintings, and landing in a sea of electricity". Visions of snakes and vines in bright primary colours are very common but, for the trained shamanic eye, information on the illnesses and diseases which inhabit his client's bodies are also expected. It is these visions which enable him, and the spirit of ayahuasca, to heal his clients.

During the visionary phase, purging may also take place through vomiting or diarrhoea. This is often emotionally uncomfortable for Westerners who are brought up to control their bodily functions and not to 'let go' of themselves, but it is welcomed by the people of the Amazon since it is this purge which removes the 'poison' that can lead to illness, and clears the system both physically and spiritually. Of course, the shaman must never purge since he is a master of (or partner to) the vine and must control the healing ceremony.

Javier is a Maestro (master) of ayahuasca (also known as an ayahuascero) and has spent 14 years understanding the ways and the spirit of this and other plants, which he refers to as "the jungle doctors". The training of an ayahuascero is arduous, involving abstention from certain foodstuffs, from alcohol and from sex, since the spirit of ayahuasca, while angelic and protective, can also express very human emotions, such as jealousy and anger, and can turn vengeful, with unpleasant consequences for those who approach it in an impure manner.

Training as an ayahuascero also involves long periods of time spent in jungle isolation, "dieting" the plants, which means regular (often nightly) ingestion of ayahuasca, along with many others which are considered healers. He must also follow a special diet which denies him sugar, salt, alcohol, pork and other foods. In fact, the diet consists largely of rice, fish and rice water – and even that might be considered lavish since all of the food must be found locally or carried into the jungle, where the shaman must remain for months at a time. The harshness of this training regime is exemplified by one Amazonian shaman whose mentor once gave him tobacco to diet, in a mix so strong that it bordered on toxic. After consuming the fermented tobacco drink, the shaman retired to a jungle cabin where he lay in a coma-like state for three days. "When you take this drink, you'll either live or you'll die", his mentor told him. "If you live, you will know tobacco"2.

"Every plant has a spirit", says Javier. "The shaman goes into the forest as part of his apprenticeship and spends years taking plants and roots. He takes ayahuasca too and the spirit tells him what it cures. Then the shaman tries another plant, each time remembering which ailment is cured by that.

"As the spirits, or plant doctors, who teach us are pure, they are made happy when we are pure too. So a shaman must diet in order to attract them. That means they should not eat salt, sugar or alcohol, and they should abstain from sex.

"You learn all this in the wilderness. The spirits there are the angels of each plant, to which you add your own will to heal the client. This is the will of Christ"3.

Javier's own training has taken place under the tutelage of his grandfather, a Banco (master shaman), who, under the protection of ayahuasca, is able to spend up to eight hours beneath the waters of the Amazon rivers, communicating "with the biggest fish of the river", according to Javier. Once, he also saw a mermaid there, who is now a guardian and tutor to the old shaman. Soon Javier will begin his own "river training" on his own path to becoming a Banco.

The use of ayahuasca is completely egalitarian, according to Javier; its healing spirit being available to anyone who partakes of the drink, though it is often the shaman who carries out the healing, per se, once the spirit of ayahuasca has revealed the nature of the illness to him.

Laboratory tests reveal no significant healing properties for ayahuasca, only hallucinogenic qualities, so it is surprising to Western scientists and clinicians that such results are possible. For Javier, the explanation is simple: the spirit of the plant is a healer and it has, he says, had similar remarkable results in curing Western visitors with ailments including cancers and HIV, as well as alcoholism, drug addictions and other more emotional problems.

"I had a patient who was HIV positive and had been in hospital a fortnight", said Javier. "That night we drank [ayahuasca, and] I saw in my vision that HIV was like the devil destroying him and that he was getting worse.

"He stuck to the [ayahuasca] diet for two months [and] he also took bitter tasting herbs which cure internal wounds. After three times [three ayahuasca sessions] he was better and, when tested, proved HIV negative"3.

The Pulitzer Price-nominated author, John Perkins, who has written extensively about ayahuasca usage among the Shuar Indians of Ecuador, has confirmed other 'miraculous' healings. "During the ten years we have been taking people to meet the shamans, there have been a number of remarkable stories", he says4 – among them, cures for deafness, depression, weight loss, as well as endless accounts of life changes and new visions for a different personal and social future.

Against this backdrop of radical and positive change, it is depressing for Javier to reflect that the rainforest, home to so many healing plants – millions of them still unknown to Western medicine – is being destroyed so quickly by the 'developed' nations, with so little consideration of the consequences of this action. Every three seconds in the Amazon rainforest, one entire species is wiped out forever as a result of this development in order that Westerners might eat more burgers and drive more cars – the very things (pollution and fast food) which are, in many cases, causing disease in the first place.

People create such 'madness' as a result of confusion and to be noticed, says Javier. Ultimately, they are searching for love and belonging but, in the West, they believe this comes through status, rather than the more direct route of loving intent.

Javier's point was underlined a few years ago, when he worked with a group of Westerners of which I was a member. Immediately prior to the ayahuasca ceremonies, Javier asked the group what they really wanted from their lives.

Most answered with spiritual or 'cosmic' answers and spoke of world peace and saving the planet, etc. Javier looked bemused and confused. He asked again and this time, after a little more thought and a good deal more honesty, people said what they really wanted was love. This Javier could understand. The requests were real and immediate – but it was as if people had not felt entitled to ask for these personal things.

Yet, paradoxically, these honest desires are where true healing begins, said Javier, since, if more people in the West were able to experience love, there would be no need for the madness of developed society, the search for more status and material gain and the destruction this leads to – and, consequently, no need to save the planet, which would never be in danger. "Love solves problems", say Javier, simply. "Ayahuasca cures through love".

Judge Not

I hope that you are making strides as you continue along your journey to spiritual development and connecting to that part of you that is purely spiritual. I want to take this time to talk to you about judging other people. I chose this topic because judging other people is something that we as humans do all the time. We have always lived in a society that is prone to judging other people and drawing conclusions based little or no information. It is in fact true more today than ever before. Personally speaking I know that I have to make a conscious decision everyday to make sure that I am not succumbing to that very basic human emotion of being judgmental. Now there are those days when it is a very difficult thing for me to do. On those days I remember a very important quote of Jesus. "Judge not least you should be judged cast out the beam in your own eye before you can cast out the beam in your brothers eye."

The fact is being judgmental is an emotion that we all have and it comes with being a human being. The problem with this emotion is that it is based on our own experiences, circumstances and things that have made us who we are. There are things that must be considered before we attempt to pass judgment on some one else. We must have an understanding of the experiences, circumstances and things that have made a person who they are before we can judge a person. It does not matter if it is because of what a person has said, done, feel or the way the way a person looks.

More times than not the person that is doing the judging is at a bitter disadvantage because they do not have all the information that is need in order to make a judgment about someone else in the first place. Now there are going to be times in all of our lives that we are going to have to judge some one it's inevitable. What you need to remember when you find yourself in this situation is the words of Jesus "Judge not least you should be judged cast out the beam in your own eye before you can cast out the beam in your brothers eye" If you are where you need to be with regard to your spirituality and your relationship with God. In addition to the fundamental principals of spirituality that you have implemented into your life everyday to be the best possible human being that you can be then you are in a position to begin to judge some one. I must caution you that when you are judging someone be careful that in forming your judgment you have left room to do everything that is within your power to change the thinking, behavior or words of the person that you are judging. Even after your judgment you must put yourself in the position to be able to help the person correct their behavior, thinking or words. In other words you can not judge a person for stealing food because they are hungry when you have not offered to give that person something to eat or invited that person over to you house to eat with you every time that you eat.

The Teacher and the Rebellious Student - A Question Raised

A teacher is telling his Students how to solve a difficult problem with a proven formula. A clever yet rebellious student claims that what the teacher is teaching, that his way of solving the problem is wrong.
The student implies that the teacher is incapable, that the student insists that he knows a better way, an easier way.

There are some students in the class that believe the rebel student may be right, and so sides with the student also becoming rebellious.

Do you see the situation at hand?

What should the teacher do?
Should he throw the rebels out, is that wise you think? If the teacher was to throw the rebels out, what would be the effect? What would the other students, the other onlookers Think?

Do you not think that it would breed doubts in the other students, that the rebel student maybe right, and the teacher just doesn't want to be proven wrong. Ultimately the teacher would lose the respect of his students.

I don't know about anyone else, but it seems like common sense that you as the teacher, to keep all those concerned happy, you would only have one diplomatic way to go, and that is to let the student talk, to see what he has to say has any relevance, to allow the rebel to show the class how he would solve the problem.

If you can imagine the teacher as God and the rebel student as Satan. God has only done what the teacher does. Adam and Eve are not the only ones involved; Angels, millions of angels made up the rest of the class(Job 38:7;Daniel 7:10)

How God handled the rebellious situation greatly affects the angels and eventually all the intelligent life. God has allowed satan to show how he would rule mankind, along with allowing humans to govern themselves under satans guidance.

The teacher knows that the rebel and the students on his side are wrong. He knows that for the benefit of the class, he must allow the student to have the opportunity to try to prove their point. When the rebels fail. Those concerned will see that the teacher is the only one qualified to lead the class.
So when the teacher removes the rebel and his followers, the class will fully understand.

Honest-hearted humans and angels will benefit from seeing satans failures, and that "we as earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step".(Jeremiah 10:23).

But why so long?

Why has God not prevented these bad things from happening. The teacher had to consider two things, first he would not stop the student from presenting his theory, second not to help the student make his case. God has to allow time to prove his case, and in the thousands of years of history, mankind has tried every form of self rule, or human government, to our own detriment.

Agreed there has been some advancement in science and other fields. But Poverty, crime, and war are ever prevalent, in fact its forever increasing.
If God was to prevent these crimes, and injustices, would he not, in affect be supporting the rebels cause. Would God in actual fact be making people think that perhaps humans can govern themselves without disastrous results?

If God was to act in that way, he would become a part of a lie. However its "impossible for God to lie"(Hebrews 6:18). Imagine the teacher gives the student a week to show his theory,is that fair?
Now know that one day to God is a thousand years to us.Seven Thousand years and the end will come.

When the week ends, God will finish that which he started, the very thing that he purposed for all mankind will come to pass.
